Beta blockers, a widely used drug to reduce blood pressure, may have an additional side benefit according to new research. A study released in January of 2013 indicated that patients who took beta blockers were at a lower risk of contracting dementia. It has also been shown to slow the rate of decline in adults that are already exhibiting symptoms of dementia.

Reye’s syndrome is a very rare disease that affects the liver and brain. Children that have a metabolic disorder and are recovering from a virus are the ones most often affected by this disease. Since Reye’s syndrome can be life threatening, early diagnosis and treatment is essential to helping the child recover from the disease. Aspirin has recently been linked to the development of Reye’s syndrome, so use caution whenever giving aspirin to teenagers and children, especially if they are recovering from a viral infection.
Menopause typically occurs in women when they enter their 50’s but can occur earlier in some women. Menopause is usually characterized by the lack of a menstrual cycle for more than one year. As women age, their body’s reproductive hormones naturally diminish and decline. A hysterectomy can also cause early menopause, as this procedure surgically removes the uterus and ovaries.
